Should You be Looking For a
Fluoride Water Filter?

If you've found this page, you're probably thinking about a fluoride water filter, which means you're aware of at least some of the potential problems caused by the addition of fluoride to your drinking water, supposedly to improve dental health. But let's run down a few of those possible problems: dental fluorosis (permanent tooth disfigurement), skeletal fluorosis, immune system impairment, osteoarthritis, suppressed thyroid function, birth defects, bone cancer, joint pain, muscular weakness, headache, increased blood levels of lead, and brain lesions that are very similar to those found with Alzheimer's disease, just to name a few.

However, the worst part of the situation is that, even if you ignore every possible bad effect of water fluoridation, it basically comes down to forced medication by the government, using a compound that has been never been proven to work - because tooth decay has declined just as much in countries that do not allow fluoridation as those where the water is fluoridated. Also, even assuming that fluoride was effective at controlling dental cavities, what is the rationale for drinking it? Fluoridated toothpastes are available. Those that believe that fluoride will improve their dental health can get it's perceived benefit without even having to ingest it. The rest of us shouldn't be forced to swallow what many of us feel to be a poison.

Anyway, if you've done any research on the subject, you know that ordinary water filters will not remove fluoride (also frequently called fluorine) from water. To get fluoride out of your water, you need a specific fluoride water filter, and they're not that widely available.

However, there are options for removing fluoride. Distillation will remove all minerals and toxic substances, including fluoride, from your water. Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems will also remove just about everything, including fluoride. These are both valid choices, but effective ones are usually quite pricey. If you're interested in a lower cost option, there are fluoride water filters that resemble the typical countertop or undersink water filter both in appearance and price, and will remove all or most of the fluoride from your drinking water.
